Even Professional Designers do not always walk into a space & know instantly how to arrange it
They need to study the area & work at development of an appropriate, cohesive scheme based as much on the shape & existing features of the space, as on developing colour & other elements of the finished scheme
It is not surprising that D I Y'ers often cannot get the exact result they want especially in updating an existing, already decorated space
Having to decorate around existing features, which automatically contribute to the overall look just by being there, is a common problem
What should stay & what should go??
what needs to be introduced??
The perfect space to decorate is an empty one
It is easy to see the advantages & limitations of the area
its shape, size, volume, colour, light sources
You are free to conceptualise & add or subtract elements & objects as you please
However the perfect space is rare
so in order to achieve change & update decor,
firstly work at comprehending the space, taking note of its shape, size & sources of light,
Edit (cover or remove) any elements that might limit your ability to gain perspective & achieve change (this might mean taking out all the existing furniture, if need be)
