What can be defined as 'Home'?

the dictionary says "home isn't easy to define but you know when you're there"

so How does a space, a place, impart a sense of belonging?

It must be a place to which you eagerly return
Certainly it is the place where you find sustenance & it is a safe haven
Where you can find privacy
Where personal effects are safely kept &
where you can immerse yourself in personal interests,

It should also be a comfort zone

Where there is, idealistically, peace, harmony &
EASE OF LIVING

Jasper Finch embraces the holistic philosophy of 'Home' as refuge,
provider of day-to-day living resources
& source of contentment

Even Professional Designers do not always walk into a space & know instantly how to arrange it
They need to study the area & work at development of an appropriate, cohesive scheme based as much on the shape & existing features of the space, as on developing colour & other elements of the finished scheme

It is not surprising that D I Y'ers often cannot get the exact result they want especially in updating an existing, already decorated space
Having to decorate around existing features, which automatically contribute to the overall look just by being there, is a common problem

What should stay & what should go??
what needs to be introduced??

The perfect space to decorate is an empty one
It is easy to see the advantages & limitations of the area
its shape, size, volume, colour, light sources
You are free to conceptualise & add or subtract elements & objects as you please

However the perfect space is rare
so in order to achieve change & update decor,
firstly work at comprehending the space, taking note of its shape, size & sources of light,
Edit (cover or remove) any elements that might limit your ability to gain perspective & achieve change (this might mean taking out all the existing furniture, if need be)

ABOUT TRENDS          colour, style  image
Choosing Colour  ione of the more exciting activities associated with home decorating
however it is often not easy.

‘Follow the Fashion?'
Following Fresh New Trends, is relatively easy to do because of other people's use of everything associated with them, colour charts, construction materials, furniture & furnishings, products for the home, etc, however there is limited personal  choice in this method.

A current Trend is of using hard materials & colours, (some may say giving a "masculine look") which undoubtably has appeal to many

However, If you would prefer to surround yourself with soft shapes, & warm colours, your opinion should be your influencer rather than what is 'ON TREND'?

'Trendy'
By definition it means something fleeting, brief, exciting. but it is a puzzling notion because just beyond the 'New',  there lurks the undesirable destination of 'Dated', the potential reality for anything associated with it

Of course some trends last longer than others & many make a return or become classic - look at mid century modern & green, & orange.

Personal  Choice  - The point is >>> What you like is not wrong for you.
(whether trendy/classic or other style or colour scheme)

If you adore a new idea, 'Trend',  by all means embrace it, however do be careful with startling new concepts that possibly will date, or that you will quickly tire of - 'that trendy, bright hugely expensive furniture that warms your heart right now, might just start to annoy you long before you want to replace it.'
One reason why 'classic style' appeals to so many is the fact that its elements last & don't need to be replaced or updated so often.

Endless Possibilities

We have evolved to see colour in our surroundings & nature has given us plenty of beautiful hues >
azure daytime sky, red sky at sunset,
turquoise sea, sometimes midnight blue or all tints & shades of grey,

we notice flowers & trees far more exuberant than a rainbow,
earth that can be ochre, rocky rich brown or sandy sable,

we see persimmon orange & lemon yellow &
endless varieties of colourful birdlife (e,g. the sumptuous peacock blue)

Any colour can be demure or dazzling , as a feature or as an accent given the right treatment
So
Don't limit choice - be your own adviser when it comes to choosing something you could adore living with.  It's Your bliss.
